PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Public invited to share park ideas on October 14
City to partner with Iowa State University for park master planning
The City of Algona will host a come and go open house on Tuesday, October 14 at City Hall from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. to hear the public’s ideas for the future park that will be located on the site of the former Peck Auction House.
The city has partnered with landscape architecture students from Iowa State University, led by Associate Professors Dr. Caroline Westort and Hans Klein-Hewett, to create plans for this space. The class of approximately 30 students will work in teams to create multiple master plans for the property.
In preparation for the project, the class visited Algona to meet city staff, view the community, visit current parks and see the future park space. The students documented the city and park parcel and investigated the demographics, circulation, history, and heritage of Algona.
At the community engagement open house on October 14, the students will collect information and gather ideas from the public to help shape their plans. At the end of the project, the students' design proposals will be shared with city staff and the city council for further consideration.
In 2024 the Donald R. Tietz Charitable Foundation donated approximately 51 acres of property to the City of Algona for the purpose of expanding and improving public parks and recreation in the community. The site is located south of the Algona Aquatic Center and South Park pickleball courts, and includes open green spaces, wooded areas and access to the East Fork Des Moines River.
To learn more about the project or to share ideas for the future park, contact City Hall at 515-295-2411.
