12th Annual Founders’ Day Celebration
July 12 - 15, 2012

Algona Founders’ Day

Beginning in 1999, the Algona Founders’ Day quickly became a tradition honoring the two men who founded the community. On July 10, 1854, brothers, Asa C. Call, and Ambrose A. Call, noted the beauty of the location overlooking the river and the bluffs beyond, with a fine grove of timber to the North and South. Asa said, “Ambrose, I believe this is the place for our city.”

A joint City of Algona & Algona Chamber of Commerce celebration, Founders’ Day is a celebration for all ages. Many school and family reunions are planned around the event as it grows each year.

The festival kicks off Thursday night with entertainment on the Carnegie Library Lawn on Nebraska Street. New in 2012 is a Riverview Cemetery tour.

Friday’s activities feature free children’s movies, bus tours of historic and modern day Algona, kids games, live entertainment on the Carnegie Library Lawn, the Morwens Kiwanis Talent Show at the O.B. Laing Middle School. Friday night’s feature event is a street dance featuring a live band ($5 admission) featuring The Johnny Holm Band.

Showboat Open Golf Tournament at River Road on Sunday, July 15.

The Algona POW Museum is open from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm during the celebration.

The Algona Founders Day Celebration is made possible each year by many sponsors and volunteers, and the Algona Chamber of Commerce and City of Algona thank each of them for their contribution.
